Shepherd Life

Pepe the ornery beagle with his best girl Liberty.  Pepe lived in the neighbor's yard, and spent his nights in the garage.  He wasn't very social.  The neighbors asked if our girls would like to keep him, and we embraced the opportunity/challenge.  We have fond memories of our times together.  Having proved they could care for a pet, the girls saved up all of their allowance money and pet-sitting salary to pay for Liberty's freedom.  Liberty was born in a trailer park, and the rest of her litter died of Parvo.  We were so grateful when she cleared the quarantine and came home.

Pepe and Liberty spent a lot of time roaming the California beaches and countryside together, keeping the girls entertained and challenged.  This picture captured them on the side of the Kern river.

Pepe was likely trying to keep up with Liberty, or enticed by a young lady with food to wander on the ice.

Snuggles and rest after a big adventure, Pepe and his best girl Liberty

Liberty relaxing with her chicken friends.  When first introduced to chickens, Liberty played with 7 out of 8 until they just stopped playing.  One lone rooster hid well enough to survive Liberty's game.  Note, Liberty became so accustomed to the chickens that they were asking to share her snack.

Allie (Allegiance) von su Liberty, greeting the ~35 new chicks that just arrived in the mail.  It's hard to imagine country living without dogs and chickens.  What fun would it be?
